Dry eye is a disorder of the tear film due to tear deficiency or excessive tear evaporation. This condition causes damage to the exposed eye surface with symptoms of ocular discomfort and a "burning" or "scratchy" sensation. Women and contact lens wearers suffer more frequently from this condition. A Schirmers' test measures tear film production and a variety of therapies are available to treat this condition. Treatment options include dietary modifications and supplements, use of artificial tears, insertion of punctal plugs and prescription eye drops.
